Sweater Guide

Sweater Guide

Cashmere sweaters are often seen as delicate pieces — beautiful, but high-maintenance. At Pogn, we believe that with the right care and preservation, cashmere can be just as durable, approachable, and easy to enjoy in everyday life.

This guide is here to bridge the gap between perception and reality. We’ll share simple, practical ways to care for your sweaters so they remain soft, warm, and long-lasting — ready to wrap you in Pogn warmth season after season.

01. What is Sweater ?

Sweater is carefully knitted creation made from yarn, not fabric. What makes it special is how it’s made: loop by loop, not stitch by stitch on a sewing machine.

Unlike shirts or jackets cut from cloth, sweaters are formed directly from yarn using knit techniques that give them their signature softness, stretch, and comfort. That’s why a good sweater moves with you, breathes with you, and lasts for years.

Not all knits are sweaters, though. A true sweater usually has sleeves, is designed for layering, and is made to hold warmth, without stiff structure or lining. From chunky cables to fine-gauge cashmere, sweaters are as much about feeling as they are about function.

02. What Makes a Sweater

02.1 Natural Fibres

The finest sweaters start with natural fibres. At Pogn, we use high-quality yarns like cashmere and wool, sourced and handled with care. Cashmere, for example, is collected by gently combing goats in early spring — a process that preserves the delicate, downy hairs which make it so soft and rare.

02.2 Length & Fineness

Longer fibres mean less pilling and a smoother finish. Premium cashmere fibres are under 19 microns in diameter — about three times finer than human hair — making them lightweight, breathable, and incredibly soft.

02.3 Insulation

Natural fibres like cashmere insulate by trapping warm air in their hollow structure, making them eight times warmer than regular wool. They're also breathable and moisture-wicking, which makes sweaters made from these fibres comfortable in both winter and spring.

02.4 Gauge & Ply

Gauge refers to how tightly the sweater is knitted, measured in stitches per inch. A higher gauge (like 18) gives a finer, lighter fabric, while lower gauges (like 5 or 7) create heavier, chunkier knits.
Ply describes how many yarn strands are twisted together — 2-ply offers durability, while 4-ply adds more warmth and body, though not necessarily more quality.

03. Sweater Care

03.1 Washing

You don’t need to wash your sweater after every wear. For everyday knits, handwash gently with sweater-safe detergent or use your machine’s delicate/wool setting (cold water, no spin). Always place the sweater in a laundry bag. Delicate textures like bouclé or brushed knits should be professionally cleaned.

03.2 Drying

Never hang a wet sweater. Instead, lay it flat on a towel, roll it to press out excess water, then reshape and air-dry flat. Hanging may stretch the fibers.

03.3 Ironing

To remove creases, turn the sweater inside out and iron on the lowest heat setting using a damp cloth as a buffer — or use a handheld steamer at a distance.

03.4 Storing

Fold sweaters and store them in a cool, dry, dark place. Avoid hangers. Use cedar balls or lavender sachets to prevent moths, and place items in breathable bags for long-term storage.

03.5 Pilling

Pilling is normal and caused by friction. To remove pills, lay the sweater flat and gently brush with a fabric comb — it keeps your piece looking fresh for years.

04. Knitting Techniques

04.1 Plain Knit

Clean and timeless. Our plain knit sweaters come in a range of weights, from featherlight fine knits to cozy mid-gauge staples.

04.2 Cable Knit

Featuring traditional twisted patterns, cable knits add depth and structure. Available in light to heavy gauges, they offer both warmth and classic texture.

04.3 Brushed Finish

Created using a special post-knit brushing technique, these knits feel cloud-like and ultra-soft — ideal for elevated comfort.

04.4 Open Knit

Light and airy, open-knit sweaters use extended loops to create breathability and movement. A go-to style for warmer seasons.

04.5 Bouclé

Bouclé yarn has a looped texture that gives a rich, tactile surface. Soft, dimensional, and visually unique.

04.6 Milano Stitch

A dense, structured stitch combining vertical and diagonal patterns — ideal for sweaters with sharp lines and tailored silhouettes.

04.7 Textured Knit

From ribbed to terry-inspired textures, these knits bring volume and character while remaining soft and wearable.

04.8 Fair Isle & Pattern Work

Inspired by traditional Nordic motifs, patterned knits layer color and meaning into the fabric. Each stitch tells a story.
